Obituary

Robert G. Guempel
March 3, 1928 – January 31, 2020.

Robert G. Guempel (Bob) passed away in Ocean Medical Center in Brick, NJ on January 31, 2020, following a fall at home, which compounded into respiratory failure. He was born in Newark, NJ, later moving to Maplewood. He graduated from Columbia High School at age 16 where he played baseball. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1948 at age 20 with a degree in Business Management and Finance. He was employed at Jersey Mortgage Company for over 40 years, rising to the level of Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer. He was also the Chief Operating Officer of Hamilton Investment Trust. Bob was very active in the financial services industry and served on many community advisory boards. He was the youngest President of the NJ Mortgage Bankers Association.

Bob was very active in the community, serving on the boards of Elizabeth General Medical Center Foundation, where he and his business partner, Sefton Stallard, raised funds for needed services and expansion.
Prior to retiring to Bay Head Shores in Pt. Pleasant, NJ, Bob was a resident of Madison, NJ where he and his wife Jeanne built their first home in 1953 and raised a family. Bob coached Little League Baseball, and was President of the Madison Planning Board for many years. He was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church in Madison, where he served as an usher and also on the Vestry and as a Warden. Upon retiring to Point Pleasant, he became active in All Saints Church, serving on the vestry. Bob and Jeanne enjoyed winters in Florida and attended Bethesda by the Sea.

Bob assisted the Hunterdon Development Center Parents Association, a resident school for disabled children where daughter Linda resides.

Bob enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ as well as Manasquan River Golf club, where he won the Senior Division two years in a row. Outside of family, Bob’s true passion was Bridge. He and Jeanne enjoyed playing bridge at Manasquan River Golf Club as well as the Bay Head Yacht club, where he often came out a winner.

Bob was a very proud alumni of Bucknell University. He was very active , chairing the 50th reunion and establishing a scholarship fund for financial assistance. He had the pleasure to see 2 children, 3 grandchildren (and 2 of their spouses) attend Bucknell. He followed all things Bucknell and often wrote letters of support for qualified students where Bucknell was their first choice. In fact, he obtained a hand held phone solely so that he could follow Patriot League sports.
Bob was a fan of the NY Giants and NY Yankees and also a lifetime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Above all, Bob was a family man. He enjoyed his family and nothing pleased him more than being around them. He is survived by Jeanne, his beloved wife of 66 years, his children: Herbert (and Joanne) Guempel, Scot (and Nancy) Guempel, Linda Guempel, Sheri (and Everett) Morgan and Karen Lockburner, 11 grandchildren: Robert (& Courtney) Guempel, Jennifer (&Tom) Leaman, Julie (and Jay Rosania) Guempel, Peter Guempel, David (& Stephanie) Guempel, Steven (and Kortney) Guempel, Everett Morgan III, Hunter Morgan, Thomas Lockbuner III, Rebecca Lockburner, Mathew Lockburner and 4 great grandchildren: Scotlyn Leaman, Noelle Leaman, Evelyn Guempel and Lillian Guempel, his sister, Betty Freyberger and many nieces and nephews. Bob made an impact on all and he will be dearly missed.

My sincere condolences to the Guempel family! Mr. Guempel was like a father to me when I lived in Jersey and we've remained in touch through the years. Scot is my most cherished friend in the world and my heart goes out to him, his brother Bert, their sisters, and all the grandkids. A special condolence to Mrs. Guempel as I know it will be terribly tough to lose a good man of a marriage that lasted so long. RIP Mr. Guempel and you'll be missed by alot of family and friends I know. Say hello to your old friends, my grandparents, in heaven!
