Chief Lloyd F. Tassey Jr, (ret. Avon by the Sea Police Department) 78, of Avon by the Sea passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune with his devoted family at his side.
Lloyd was born in Kearny and had resided in Wall Twp. before moving to Avon 57 years ago. He was a member of the US Naval Reserve for 9 years after being activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a graduate of Manasquan High School and attended St. James Episcopal Church, Bradley Beach.
He joined the Avon Police Department in 1960 and became the Chief of Police in 1977, proudly serving until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the NJ State PBA, the Monmouth County Police Chief’s Association, and the International Chiefs of Police Association.
Chief Tassey was also a member of the Avon First Aid Squad, and a life member of the Avon Fire Department, serving as Chief of the department from 1963-64. He was the Firemen of the Year in 1970. He was also a life member of the Firemen’s Exempt Association.
He was predeceased by his parents Lloyd F. and Lillian Andersen Tassey Sr. Surviving is his devoted wife of 57 years Lois Hagerman Tassey, his son Lloyd F. Tassey III of Tinton Falls, his daughter Laurie Moore and husband John of Avon by the Sea and their 2 daughters Molly and Marian Moore, and his sister Claire Gamble.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Wednesday, from 4-8pm followed by a Funeral Service on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 11:00am at the O’ Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Avon Police Association, 301 Main St., Avon by the Sea, NJ 07717.
