Chuck Wrege Groupie

What can I say about the loss of Dr. Charles D. Wrege…first, I must tell you that when we met, he introduced himself to me as Chuck, not Dr. Wrege,  he was neither pretentious nor overly formal,  so Chuck is what I called him. Everyone who knew Chuck knows that he was many wonderful things…a true scholar, a respected mentor, and a beloved husband to his late wife “B” so I won’t belabor those points. That said; let me confess by saying that I consider myself to be a “Chuck Wrege Groupie.” Because we lived so far apart, Chuck and I mostly communicated by telephone.  When I called him, he would greet me with such energy! “Helloooo, Heather!!!” I loved that greeting; it always made me feel kind of special.  I also loved the fact that Chuck was always in the process of making some amazing discovery, he was tireless! Once the conversation began, we would converse for hours on end. I primarily listened attentively as Chuck regaled me with stories of his youth, the war, the love of his live, the Hawthorne Studies, the Eastland Disaster, Pig Iron, Fredrick W. Taylor, Bell Telephone, The Phantom of the Operator….well, the list just goes on and on. I could listen to him tell me those stories over and over and never tire of listening. I already miss those phone calls. I will miss the man I came to love as if he were my blood relative. Chuck Wrege is irreplaceable in so many ways. My condolences go out to all of you who share in the loss of this brilliant and truly remarkable man.
